San Francisco Theological Seminary
Location: San Anselmo, California
Project Description:
Seismic strengthening and restoration of two masonry structures built in 1898. These castle like buildings constructed from local San Rafael bluestone with sandstone accents and mansard slate roofs had fallen into disrepair and were abandoned following damage sustained during the Loma Prieta earthquake. Though the project is not an historic restoration by definition, the buildings occupy a central role in the historic and aesthetic culture of San Anselmo. Strict sensitivity was demanded in the execution of the work in order to minimize the impact of the invasive structural upgrades required to seismically brace these intricate buildings and return them to function as office, classroom, and conference facilities. The project is located on an active seminary campus surrounded by a quiet residential neighborhood. Therefore, this unique site necessitated detailed planning and vigilant coordination with campus officials to mitigate any disturbance to the surrounding community.
